DR Congo claimed inaugural AfroCan title. They breezed past Kenya in the championship game tonight. Maxi Munanga (191-G-93) delivered 20 points and 7 rebounds for the champions. DR Congo jumped to a 29:18 lead after ten minutes. Kenya however denied the deficit and eked out a 37:36 halftime lead. But not for long though. DR Congo replied with a 29:10 run in the third term to spur ahead for good. Evariste Shonganya (204-F/C-92) tallied 18 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists for DR Congo. Tylor Ongwae (201-F-91, college: ULM) replied with 21 points and 9 rebounds for Kenya.
3-4 PlaceMorocco - Angola 71-88
Angola clinched Bronze medals in Bamako. They beat Morocco in the consolation final. Hermenegildo Santos (192-G-90) scored 17 points to lead the charge. Morocco built a 40:33 halftime lead. But Angola responded with a 55 points in the second half to coast to the win. Fidel Cabita (206-C-93) netted 15 points for Angola. Sami Al Uariachi (185-PG) replied with 16 points for Morocco.
5-6 PlaceMali - Chad 75-64
Mali outscored Chad to earn the fifth place in Bamako. Ibrahim Djambo (208-F-92, college: Hofstra, agency: AgainHello) nailed 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the hosts. Chad eked out a 39:37 halftime lead. But Mali responded with a 38:25 second half run to ice the win. Amadou Kaba provided 11 points for Mali. Michael Koibe (198-F/G-92) netted 22 points for Chad.
7-8 PlaceTunisia - Algeria 68-67
Tunisia wrapped up the tournament on a high note. They nipped Algeria to earn the 7th position. Tunisia posted a 28:13 lead after ten minutes. Algeria held their opponents to just 24 points in the second half but could not avoid the loss. Jawhar Jawadi (189-F-97) posted 18 points, while Mohamed Rassil (198-F-98) added 11 points for Tunisia. Abdellah Hamdini (200-F-92) replied with 26 points for Algeria.

Kenya eased into the championship game in Bamako as they thumped Morocco. Kenya dominated from start to finish. They recorded a 50:26 halftime lead. Kenya drained 46 points in the second half and cruised to the victory. Erick Mutoro (180-PG-92) posted 32 points, while Tylor Ongwae (201-F-91, college: ULM) accounted for 20 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for Kenya. Sami Al Uariachi (185-PG) replied with 20 points for Morocco.
DR Congo - Angola 84-78
DR Congo advanced into the title game as they held off Angola. DR Congo trailed by 9 points after ten minutes of action. But they held Angola to only 10 points in the second frame to pull within two points. DR Congo drained 54 points in the second half to snatch a crucial win. Six players scored in double digits for DR Congo. Maxi Munanga (191-G-93) stepped up with 20 points, while Evariste Shonganya (204-F/C-92) added 17 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds for the winners. Fidel Cabita (206-C-93) replied with 19 points for Angola.

Tunisia - Kenya 76-82 OT
Kenya rallied past Tunisia to reach the semis. Tunisia grabbed a 36:33 halftime lead. But Kenya used a 20:10 run in the third term to surge ahead. Tunisia stooped the bleeding in the fourth quarter and managed to force overtime. But Kenya drained 14 points in the extra period to ice the victory. Griffin Ligare (174-G-85) posted 22 points, while Tom Wamukota (211-C-93, college: Wichita St.) added 21 points and 14 rebounds for Kenya. Jawhar Jawadi (189-F-97) responded with 18 points for Tunisia.
Angola - Algeria 89-62
Angola stormed past Algeria to reach the semifinals in Bamako. Angola recorded a 50:32 halftime lead. Angola kept Algeria at bay throughout the second half and rolled to the victory. Carlos Cabral (188-G-95) and Edson Ndoniema (191-G-91) posted 13 points each for Angola. Zakaria Guezout (200-F-92) and Touhami Ghezzoul (209-C-87, college: N.Dakota St. JC) had 11 points apiece in the loss.
DR Congo - Chad 67-60
DR Congo defeated Chad to enter Final Four. Chad eked out a 36:35 halftime lead. DR Congo however limited Chad to just 24 points in the second half to snatch the win. Rolly Fula (198-F-93) accounted for 21 points, while Maxi Munanga (191-G-93) added 14 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds for DR Congo. Ronald Nato (199-F-92) answered with 15 points for Chad.
Mali - Morocco 61-69
Morocco upset hosting Mali in the quarterfinal clash. Morocco jumped to a 21:13 lead after ten minutes. They used a 19:14 run in the third term to take an 8-point lead. Morocco maintained the advantage throughout the fourth term and raced to the victory. Soufiane Kourdou (211-C-85) posted 18 points, while Abdelhakim Zouita (200-F-86) had 15 points for Morocco. Mamadou Keita replied with 14 points for Mali.

Kenya held off Ivory Coast to advance into the quarterfinal stage. Kenya trailed by one point at the interval 43:44. Ivory Coast boosted the lead to 3 points at the final intermission. Kenya though sank 25 points in the fourth term and snatched the win. Tylor Ongwae (201-F-91, college: ULM) posted 24 points and 10 rebounds to pace the charge. Ronald Gombe (203-PF-92) added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Kenya. Romeo Enan (208-F/C-93) and Kouadio Kouadio (189-G-90) tossed in 20 points each for Ivory Coast.

Chad reached the quarterfinal stage as they nipped Egypt in overtime. Egypt dominated in the first half. They recorded a 45:34 halftime lead. But Chad dropped 48 points in the second half to force overtime. They added 16 points in the extra period to snatch the win. Michael Koibe (198-F/G-92) banked in 28 points and 13 rebounds for Chad. Bienvenu Djimassal (200-C-93) added 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Ebrahem Khaled (191-G/F-89) and Moustafa Elmekawi (204-F/C-94) responded with 15 points each for Egypt.
Morocco - Guinea 86-52
Morocco cruised past Guinea to enter quarterfinals. Morocco built a 50:31 halftime lead. They followed with a 23:7 run in the fourth term to ice the win. Jihad Benchlikha (186-SG-92) netted 14 points, while Abdelhakim Zouita (200-F-86) notched 12 points for Morocco. Cedric Mansare (198-F-85) answered with 22 points for Guinea.
Algeria - Nigeria 84-80
Algeria reached the quarterfinal stage as they topped Nigeria in Round of 16. Nigeria eked out a 43:39 halftime lead. They entered the fourth term up by five points. But Algeria triggered a 25:16 run in the fourth term to snatch the victory. Angola clinched the first win at AfroCan. They defeated Chad to open win count. Angola went on a 64:41 run in the second and third periods to clear off for good. Childe Dundao (167-G-98) came up with 17 points, while Hermenegildo Santos (192-G-90) contributed 14 points for Angola. Bienvenu Djimassal (200-C-93) knocked down 22 points for Chad.
Group DTunisia - Guinea 77-58
Wassef Methnani (203-F-98) recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds as Tunisia beat Guinea. Tunisia recorded a 38:23 halftime lead. They maintained the lead throughout the second half and rallied to the first win at the tournament. Jawhar Jawadi (189-F-97) accounted for 13 points for Tunisia. Cedric Mansare (198-F-85) answered with 17 points for Guinea.

Morocco edge out Chad in FIBA AfroCan opener - Jul 20, 2019

Morocco, who are among the favourites to taste success at the inaugural International Basketball Federation AfroCan tournament, got their campaign off to a winning start. They were 80-75 victors over Chad in Malian capital Bamako, Mohamed Choua (202-F/C-92) starring in the Group C clash. Choua scored eight points, racked up 10 rebounds and earned two assists and two steals.
In Group A, Algeria were 85-75 winners over Ivory Coast. Group B saw a comfortable win for DR Congo, who triumphed 82-65 against Kenya. There was an even wider margin of victory for Egypt, with Guinea swept aside 84-57 in Group D. Twelve African nations are taking part in the competition, with hosts Mali, Angola, Nigeria and Tunisia not in action today. The event was set up in a bid to give African players more opportunities to play in a major tournament. Action is due to continue tomorrow.
