Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.
#1. This week's number one is an international forward
Atonye Nyingifa (180-90, college:
UCLA, currently plays in Spain). She led
ASEFA Estudiantes to a victory over the 12th-ranked Zamarat (1-4) crushing them
97-51 in the Spanish Liga Dia in Wednesday night's game.
Nyingifa was MVP of the game. She scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in a mere 16 minutes on the court.
Tuenti Movil Estudiantes Madridis placed in the Liga Dia.
It's Nyingifa's first season with the team.
Nyingifa has relatively good stats this year: 13.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.8apg, 2FGP: 55.9%(33-59) and FT: 63.2% in six games she played so far.
She has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American.
Nyingifa is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.
#2. Second place goes to an international power forward
Evelyn Akhator (190-95, college:
Kentucky, currently plays in France). She was the major contributor in
Flammes' victory against the closely-ranked Bretagne (2-2) crushing them
93-71 in the French LFB last Saturday.
Akhator scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Flammes Carolo Basket Ardennes (3-0) is placed first in the LFB.
So far her team won all three games in the Regular Season.
But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen.
This year Akhator has relatively solid stats: 14.7ppg, 8.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 58.6%(17-29) and FT: 83.3%.
She is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.
#3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward
Adaora Elonu (185-90, college:
Texas A&M, currently plays in Spain). She contributed to a
Argon Uni Girona's victory against the 13th-ranked Zaragoza (1-4)
68-60 in the Spanish Liga Dia last Sunday.
Elonu scored 10 points in 23 minutes.
Spar Citylift Girona (6-0) is placed second in the Liga Dia.
So far her team won all six games in the Regular Season.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
This year Elonu's overall stats are: 8.7ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.3spg, 3FGP: 18.2% in six games.
She is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.
Elonu is also a member of the Nigerian senior national team.
#4. Guard
Ezinne Kalu (173-92, college:
SSU, currently plays in France) faced previously mentioned Evelyn Akhator in the French LFB last game.
Kalu could not help
Bretagne (2-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite her good performance Bretagne was crushed
93-71 on the road by the leading Flammes.
Kalu scored 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 4 assists.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
Kalu has individually a very good season with high stats. She averages: 16.3ppg, 4.0rpg, 4.8apg and 3.0spg.
Kalu has both American and Nigerian nationalities.
She is also Nigerian national team player.
#5. International power forward
Sarah Imovbioh (188-92, college:
S.Carolina, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Clarinos San Cristobal in a victory against one of league's weakest teams Socinsa Bembibre (1-5)
62-55 in the Spanish Liga Dia in Saturday night's game.
Imovbioh scored only 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 15 minutes.
Clarinos San Cristobal (3-2) is placed fifth in the Liga Dia.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
This year Imovbioh's total stats are: 5.4ppg and 7.8rpg in five games.
She plays currently for the Nigerian national team.
The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams: #1. Temi Fagbenle (193-F-92, college:
USC, currently plays in Italy) led
Venezia to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked Broni (2-2) crushing them
87-38 in the Italian Serie A1 on Sunday night.
Fagbenle had a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting the same number of rebounds in 22 minutes.
Umana Reyer Venezia (3-0) is placed first in the Serie A1.
So far her team won all three games in the Regular Season.
But the season just started, so everything may happen.
Fagbenle has reliable stats this year: 14.0ppg, 7.8rpg, 2.0apg and 1.5spg in four games she played so far.
She has a dual citizenship: British and Nigerian.
#2. Nicole Enabosi (183-F-97, college:
Delaware, currently plays in Slovakia) was the major contributor in a
MBK Ruzomberok's victory against the closely-ranked Samorin (2-2) crushing them
79-42 in the Slovakian Extraliga in Saturday night's game.
Enabosi recorded 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks; quite an impressive performance considering it's only her first season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. MBK Ruzomberok (4-0) is placed first in the Extraliga.
So far her team won all four games in the Regular Season.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
Enabosi has individually a very good season with high stats. She averages: 17.8ppg, 8.8rpg, 2.5bpg and 2.3spg.
Enabosi is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.
