Cape Verde will be going to the 27th Africa Cup of Nations Afrobasket in Abidjan, Cote dIvoire as an under-dog having being drawn in group-C alongside tough opponents such as ten-time champion Angola, Central Africa Republic, but it head coach Alex Nwora believe the FIBA Africa Zone-II nation can surpass its quarter final feat of 2007.

The Nigerian-born Cape Verde tactician who spoke to FIBA Africa.com before the March 30, 2013 draw attributed the surge in Cape Verde basketball of late which saw them pick one of the two tickets in the zone ahead of Mali to hard work. Excerpt:

FIBA Africa: How do you feel to lead Cape Verde back to Afrobasket?

It feels great to see that all of the hard work paid off. I worked really hard with the Cape Verde Basketball Federation to see this to fruition. It would have been sad if we did not qualify for Abidjan 2013 Afrobasket as we were the host of the FIBA Africa Zone-II qualifier and had have spent the last couple of years trying to raise the level of Cape Verde basketball. Rest assured that Cape Verde will be ready for the summer 2013 Afrobasket.

FIBA Africa: What is the secret behind your team beating Zone-II power-house like Mali and Senegal?

I would say that our secret is hard work, dedication and commitment from the players to the coaching staff and the federation. There is no substituted for hard work. If all of our players are available and healthy, then we can compete with anybody in Africa.

FIBA Africa: Do you think Cape Verde has what it takes to repeat it 2007 performance?

If the players schedules allow them to report to camp on time, then YES we have what it takes to repeat or even do better than 2007.

FIBA Africa: Which Africa country you would want to avoid being in the same group with Cape Verde at the 2013 Afrobasket?

I cant spend my time worrying about other teams. To be successful, we need to plan, prepare, and execute. We have already proven that we are competitive. I dont think that we have to worry about other teams. We are the underdogs that will be underestimated. Other teams need to worry about us. All I can say is that Cape Verde will be ready come summer of 2013.

FIBA Africa: Tell us about basketball in Cape Verde?

Basketball in Cape Verde has grown since 2007 due to the hard and ongoing work of the Federation led by its president, Kitana Kabrea.

FIBA Africa: Brief description of Coach Alex Nwora?

I dont know how to describe myself other than as a hard worker. I believe in the xs and os of basketball and continue to be a student of the game. I have been involved both as player and a coach for over 26 years. Because I respect the rules of the game and the skills required to play well, I have been able to be very successful in my career. I am hoping that my success streak will carry me through and bring the title to Cape Verde.
